Building Your Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and respond to your emotions in ways that support your well-being. By strengthening this skill, you’ll become more attuned to your needs, rebuild trust with your body, and foster a more peaceful, balanced relationship with food.
There are five core skills that will help you navigate emotions more effectively:
1️⃣ Recognizing emotions Stop Thinking. Take a deep breath and feel. What emotions are present in your body right now? Where do you feel them?
2️⃣ Understanding emotions Why this feeling? Why now? Emotions don’t just appear—they have triggers. What happened before you felt this way? How do your emotions influence your thoughts, decisions, or behaviours?
3️⃣ Labeling emotions Build your emotional vocabulary. Find the right words to name how you feel. Instead of saying, “I feel bad”, use the Feel Wheel to pinpoint a more specific emotion—frustrated, ashamed, anxious, lonely, overwhelmed. The more precisely you label your emotions, the more power you have over them.
4️⃣ Expressing emotions You don't need to fix or hide your emotions. Give yourself permission to feel. Emotions are not good or bad—they are information. When you acknowledge them without judgment, they lose their power to control you.
5️⃣ Regulating emotions Learn how to sit with difficult emotions, and move yourself through them. You don’t need to suppress, ignore, or react impulsively to emotions. Instead, explore self-care strategies like breathing exercises, journaling, finding creative outlets, movement, or reaching out for support.
The better you get at these five skills, the easier it becomes to respond to emotions with self-awareness rather than impulsivity.
