The Best Healthy Granola

Granola can be a healthy choice, but most store bought varieties are loaded with added sugar, palm oil, and a long list of unpronounceable ingredients and preservatives that sort of cancel out all the good stuff.

This homemade version is gluten free and tastes great! It's made 100% whole grains, real butter and touch of maple syrup for sweetness.

The Best Healthy Granola

Recipe Makes: 10 servings
Pre time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 20-30 minutes

Nutrition Information
per 125 mL (68 g) serving

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups rolled oats (gluten free)
3/4 cup roasted mixed nuts (unsalted)
1/4 cup chia seeds
1/2 cup shredded or flaked coconut (unsweetened)
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup melted butter
1 Tbsp peanut butter
1/4 tsp sea salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla

Instructions
  • Preheat the oven to 160 °C (with fan) or 350 °F.
  • In a bowl, toss together the oats, nuts, chia seeds, cinnamon and salt. Do not add the coconut just yet.
  • In a separate bowl melt the butter and peanut butter together in the microwave (usually takes 30-45 seconds). Then combine the melted buttery mixture with maple syrup and vanilla. Stir to combine.
  • Drizzle the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and give everything a good toss until it’s evenly coated.  Spread the mixture out evenly onto a large baking sheet lined with baking paper.

  • Put baking sheet into the oven and bake at 160 C for about 10-15 minutes.  Then remove from the oven and turn the ingredients to make sure everything is roasting evenly.
  • Sprinkle the coconut evenly on top of the granola.  (We want this to toast light, but not burn).  Put the baking sheet back in the oven for another 10-15 minutes, keeping a close eye on the coconut so that it doesn’t burn.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool completely to room temperature to allow crunchy clusters to form. Once completely cooled, it's ready to enjoy! Sprinkle over yogurt or enjoy with milk and fresh fruit.
  • Granola can be stored in an air tight container for up to 3-4 weeks in the fridge.
