Success is NOT just a number on the scale.
When it comes to managing your weight, success is different for everyone. For most people even a modest reduction in weight (5%) can have a huge impact on overall health and wellbeing.
The key to success is to identify and address both the 'root causes' of weight gain and to remove roadblocks to establishing healthier habits moving forward.
Root causes of weight gain may be....
These factors all contribute to weight gain and present significant barriers to weight loss.
Addressing underlining social, emotional and biological issues relating to why you've gained weight are critical to achieving lasting results. "Dieting" offers a quick fix, but it's not a sustainable solution because most "diets" are too restrictive and difficult for anyone to follow long term. In order to achieve lasting results your weight loss goals must be realistic and the changes you make must be sustainable, otherwise you will be right back where you started in no time.

- Your environment
- Decreased metabolic rate
- Overeating
- Decreased physical activity

The changes required to achieve and sustain a healthy weight are one in the same. To often people say to themselves, "I'll just eat like this until I lose the weight, then I can go back to eating normally". This creates a disconnect between the changes need to lose weight and keep it off. This way of thinking perpetuates a cycle of yo-yo dieting where you lose and regain the same weight over and over again. This also slows down your metabolism making it more difficult to lose weight with each subsequent lose-regain cycle.

Success is different for everyone!
Success should not be defined by just a number on the scale. Improved quality of life, better self esteem, more energy, feeling stronger, prevention of further weight gain, modest weight loss (5%) and maintaining your 'best' weight are all indicators of success.
Your 'best' weight may never be an 'ideal' weight. If you've been overweight for many years, an 'ideal' weight or BMI may not be a realistic goal. Setting unrealistic targets may just set you up for failure. Instead set targets based on the 'best' weight. This is the weight you can sustain while still enjoying life and reaping the many benefits of improved health.
Changing your habits is a process, with set backs and roadblocks along the way. Lasting change takes time and practice, but it gets easier. Even as a Nutritionist, making healthier choices is something I have to work on every single day.
